A day for the media.
Barack Obama was inaugurated for his second term and delivered an address that was assertive in tone. Those who get paid the big bucks to opine on these things seem to think the President's call for progressive action will drive the Republicans to further apolplexy. My own sense is that Obama's affirmation of activist government is actually a clever political ploy: in staking an unvarnished position to the left, he is challenging those Republicans who do not wish to be even further marginalized by the extreme right-siders in their party to meet him partway. We should hope that negotiation, compromise and governance will replace obstructionism and ideology in Washington, and that a GOP resigned to reality assumes its proper role as the loyal opposition.

The sports media is ramping up for the Super Bowl... err... Har-bowl. Despite the customary hyperbole this event brings, I do anticipate a competitive match between two teams that each bring a good mixture of defense, rushing and passing offense to the game.
