What's the Matter With Kansas? No.32, 465

Last week, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) signed into law a bill that allows Kansas residents over 21 years old to carry concealed weapons without any permit or training. Rep. Travis Couture-Lovelady, (R), who guide the bill through committee, downplayed the importance of state-required training.

“You don't necessarily have to take a class to be proficient. Heck, I learned from grandpa on the farm,” he said.*

This is not a policy position Kansas takes in all cases. For example, when it comes to operating an automobile in the state, the requirements are more stringent:

  • Kansas residents under the age of 16 must hold a learner's permit for a minimum of six months, and also complete a State-approved driver's education program before applying for a new license.
  • Kansas residents 16 and older who have never held a license from Kansas, or any other US state or foreign country, must hold a learner's permit for a minimum of 30 days, or complete a State-approved driver's education program before applying for a new license.**

With such libertarian views on things such as firearms, I imagine I would need no special training to, say, operate a construction crane in Kansas.

Heck, I learned from my grandpa on a construction site.
