Rick Wilson's Solstice Message

06/21/18 | by nicasaurus | Categories: Politics & Current Events

Rick Wilson, a long-time Republican campaign strategist, is an engaging character: an outspoken #NeverTrump conservative, a writer who regularly contributes to The Daily Beast and other publications, and a frequent guest panelist on various cable news pundit circuses. His inventive use of language recalls the gonzo journalism of the late Hunter S. Thompson. His book, Everything Trump Touches Dies, will be published in August.

Today, as the seasons change, Rick took to Twitter to post a message of optimism in these dark days of the Trump Presidency. Take heart, my fellow American, and lean in.

1/ On this beautiful hot first day of summer as Americans prepare for the long, sweet, season of picnics, family vacations, slow days at the beach, starlit nights full of lightning bugs dancing over the meadow, and July 4th fireworks, a few reminders...

2/ First, in the struggle to overcome Trump's outrages, evils, and rejection of American values, optimism is your friend. Hard fights are good fights and good fights are hard fights.

3/ Trumpism is a dark, negative, dead-end kind of philosophy. They don't really believe in America but believe more in its decline and the insufficiency of our system. For all our flaws in the early code, this country has always been right to be optimistic about the future.

4/ Believing we can work to get to a better place has driven us through the worst obstacles. Trump is of threat to our system, values, and reputation in the world, but we're stronger, better, more resilient, and more determined as a nation than a passing personality cult.

5/ Seneca reminds us that all cruelty springs from weakness. A presidency, and the party that revels in cruelty cannot stand. A movement based on state power deployed against the week [sic], the helpless, and the desperate isn't conservative, it's pathetic.

6/ Republicans -- not enough, not strongly enough, and not passionately enough, to be sure -- watched Trump lose a battle this week, and it matters. The national bully got punched in his smug, jowly face by crying children.

7/ for two years, they've been afraid to even whisper the slightest criticism. This week, it wasn't just the chickens and the opportunist. It was people who Trump counts on. Even Republicans running for office in primaries came out opposing it.

8/ Americans have flirted with authoritarian and statist elements a time or two. We've always resisted that temptation, because our Constitution, system, and people are better than that. It takes a while sometimes for our immune system to kick in, but it is and it will...

9/ I say this not so anyone rests on their laurels or puts down their tools. Hope isn't a strategy. You can't put your sword down, and you can't rely on inertia. When you feel like his b.s. tornado is winning, and that hate is stronger than America, buck up.

10/ We're always bending the curve the right way, and fight is against enemies we've overcome before, both foreign and domestic. Faith in this country is never misplaced. I remain militantly optimistic about its future. So endeth.
