I Have a Few Questions

05/26/17 | by nicasaurus | Categories: Politics & Current Events

A few more tumultuous weeks of the derangement endemic to the current Administration gives rise to a blizzard of questions both trivial and significant. I present a few in no particular order.

Is there anything rational about Mr.Trump attacking the media, the intelligence community and, most recently, the FBI? And why are Mr. Trump and his supporters shocked by counterattacks from the media, the intelligence community and the FBI? Did they really think they could kick the hornet's nest without getting stung?

Who, if anyone, in the Trump Circle of The Corrupt will earn an extended visit to Federal prison?

Will Congressional Republicans take any actions regarding the scandals swirling around the Administration? Are they so chained to their ideological agenda that paralysis has seized them? Or are they just that cynical?

Will it be possible for the GOP and the attention-deficit-addled Mr. Trump to pass into law any form of the AHCA, their health care bill? Or tax “reform” (their euphemism for tax cuts)? Will there be an infrastructure package?

Will Congressional Democrats overplay their hand by calling for impeachment before investigations by both houses of Congress and Special Counsel Mueller are complete? Will they distract themselves pursuing the golden object that is the bent person in the White House and ignore the work of crafting an affirmative message for their party?

Will CNN or the Washington Post or some other news organization begin posting a daily tally of the number on conspiracy theories coming from both the Left and the Right?

Speaking of conspiracy theorists, will anyone corroborate the stories Louise Mensch posts? She seems more credible than some of the  purveyors of hokum on the lunatic fringe (such as those currently humping stories that DNC staffer Seth Rich’s murder last summer was linked to his supposed leaking DNC emails to WikiLeaks. This esteemed group includes former House Speaker Newt Gingrich). Ms. Mensch reportedly has sources in both British and American intelligence and claims some titillating scoops.

Given the Administration’s resistance to the investigations into relationships between members of the Trump campaign and various Russian persons, is it unreasonable to conclude the Trumpsters are hiding something? And what if the activity they are trying to conceal has less to do with Russian interference (already determined by our intelligence agencies and those of our allies) and more to do with shady financial transactions?

Regarding the above, will the media press Mr. Trump to explain why he will not release his tax returns as he promised during the campaign? Will the media and the investigators look into the fact that, on Trump’s watch as majority owner, the Trump Taj Mahal was cited and fined for money laundering? Will anyone look into the sources of funding for Trump’s businesses?

Will the Administration disclose any ethics waivers granted to former lobbyists who now work in the White House or federal agencies?

Given his conduct at this week’s NAYO meetings, has Mr. Trump done irreparable damage to our standing in world affairs?  Is the US in the process of surrendering its role os world leader?

Will Donald Trump serve his full four-year term?

Do we believe that the chaos that characterizes this Administration is more than the Russians likely hoped for when they interfered in last fall’s elections to help a useful idiot into the White House?

I could go on- there are so many more questions. Mr. Trump, the Accidental Tourist of the American Presidency, arrived in the White House on the incoming tide of sludge that was his vulgar populist pandering. He is not a public servant by temperament and intellect. He seems to believe that the President is invested with perquisites of a king. He is impatient with the rule of law, the ponderous workings of government and the constant media scrutiny. He craves the acclaim that comes with the announcement of the big deal. Yet, by challenging entrenched bureaucratic forces with his puny weapons of threats and connivance, he has proved most effective at damaging himself.

And so, a final question for this round: Will Donald Trump, when and under whatever circumstances he leaves office, be written into history as the worst President the nation has known?
