Now that Ted Cruz has won the Iowa caucuses, the “I-told-you-so’s” about the questionable nature of Donald Trump’s campaign are flooding the media. And, we are told, Marco Rubio’s close third-place finish represents the resurrection of the GOP establishment. Media, as they say, abhors a vacuum.
The Cruz ship sailed into port on the winds of evangelical fervor, an occurrence unlikely to be repeated in next week’s New Hampshire primary. (According to Brooking’s Richard Lempert, “White evangelicals constituted 62 percent of Republican caucus goers according to entrance polling, and fully a third of them supported Cruz. “) Iowa was won by Mike Huckabee in 2008 and Rick Santorum in 2012, so, despite this week’s headlines, no great significance should be placed on the Cruz victory.
